A Dubai Mom Opens Up About How Expensive School Uniforms Can Be

  • Schools across the UAE are set to welcome students back on Monday, August 31.

  • Parents are busy checking off their back-to-school shopping lists. But one UAE mom has sparked a conversation about an expense that’s leaving parents feeling frustrated… school uniforms.

  • The mom was out shopping for her children’s school uniforms when she questioned why they had become “so freaking expensive.”

  • She revealed that two formal shirts, one for her daughter and one for her son, cost her AED 180 in total. Despite the children potentially outgrowing them by next year.

  • The costs continued to add up, with a pair of plain black PE sports trousers costing AED 110. Even a simple grey school sweater featuring the school logo came with a AED 110 price tag.

  • For the mom, the issue wasn’t whether she could afford it, but the principle of paying so much for basic schoolwear, especially with school fees also due at the end of August.

Dubai’s Property Market Is Picking Up Again

Dubai’s residential property market is showing signs of a comeback, with buyers returning and the ready market leading the latest growth. According to Property Finder and Mortgage Finder, 9,217 residential transactions worth AED 34.9 billion were recorded in July, up 3.8% in volume and 5.2% in value from June.

The biggest jump came from the secondary, or ready, market, where transactions rose by around 18%, suggesting stronger demand for properties buyers can move into or invest in immediately.

Apartments vs. villas

The data also reveals a clear divide between Dubai’s apartment and villa buyers. Around 68% of villa sales were mortgaged, compared to just 20% of apartment sales. This points to stronger owner-occupier demand for villas, while apartments continue to attract more cash-heavy investors.

Buyer confidence is also returning. 68% of home seekers now plan to buy within six months, while the share expecting prices to fall further has dropped to 52%, down from a post-conflict peak of 73%.

Sellers are holding their ground too, with asking prices remaining relatively stable for a second consecutive month. Overall, July points to a market finding its balance again, with buyers returning, sellers becoming more confident and Dubai’s residential sector moving back into growth.
