A Somali referee has been dropped from the FIFA World Cup after being denied entry to the United States, sparking fresh debate about how immigration policies could impact international sport.
Omar Artan was set to become Somalia’s first-ever match official at a World Cup, but his journey ended before the tournament even began.
The decision has drawn strong reactions, including from a UAE-based sports journalist Mohammed Awaad who took to social media to voice frustration over the situation. “FIFA has faced its most embarrassing situation yet,” he wrote.
He added that Artan is widely regarded as Africa’s top referee and questioned how FIFA can continue promoting football as a unifying force while one of its officials is excluded because of his nationality.
The journalist also criticised FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s silence on the issue, saying referees and players should not be caught up in recurring entry-related problems.

The Federal Tax Authority (FTA) has rolled out a new initiative expanding what counts for VAT refunds on new residential construction.
Under the updated scheme, UAE nationals can now claim refunds on a wider list of construction-related expenses.
This includes staff quarters for watchmen, drivers or domestic workers, home gyms and game rooms, plus integrated security and smart home systems with built-in components.
It also covers smart or electronic doors for the main residence and garage, swimming pools, fountains, decorative indoor water features, landscaping, and even full home rebuilds, including demolition and reconstruction costs.
The expansion is expected to bring around AED 200 million in VAT savings for UAE nationals, averaging about AED 25,000 per claim.
Overall, the total value of approved claims is projected to cross AED 1 billion in 2026, compared to roughly AED 754 million in 2025, showing growing demand for the scheme.

A recent late-night incident involving a woman driving home from Abu Dhabi and a vigilant CID official has everyone buzzing about the city’s commitment to protecting its residents, especially women.
