On the road and suddenly your phone buzzed with an emergency alert? It sure can feel unsettling for a moment, especially if you’re behind the wheel and unsure what to do next. But here’s the thing – almost every emergency situation has a response, and sometimes being aware is all it takes to ensure one’s safety 🙌

  • All you need to do is: Slow down – find a safe shelter - avoid crowded spaces 🏡

  • Panic helps no one on the road, so slowing down gives you time to assess your surroundings and move safely to the nearest secure location. If there’s a building nearby, head towards it and follow shelter-in-place instructions once inside. 🏢

  • If you can’t reach a safe building 👇

    1) Stop the vehicle in a location away from tall buildings and glass facades

    2) Keep doors and windows closed

    3) Lower your body position as much as possible to reduce exposure to debris or fragments

    4) Cover your nose and mouth with a cloth or tissue if there’s dust or smoke

    5) Avoid stopping near poles, billboards, or gas stations

  • Once you’ve safely stopped and followed the guidelines, the next step is to watch out for the safety alert before resuming with normal activities 🔔

The Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre (adcmc_ae) recently shared simple steps under their Our Community Is Prepared campaign to help everyone stay safe while at work:

  • Stop working immediately

  • Stay calm, don’t panic

  • Move away from windows and glass

  • Head to the basement if possible

  • Use stairs, never elevators

  • Wait for the official all-clear alert before resuming activities
